Forest Facts

Black Willow is a pioneer species, meaning it is extremely shade intolerant and will be found in pure stands along the Mississippi River. As islands have been formed throughout time along the Mississippi, Black Willow would always inhabit the lowest elevation (downriver end) site on the island while cottonwood would seed in on the highest elevations (upriver end). The species is considered short-lived, with maturity occurring at 50-60 years of age. Total height can be 60-80 feet and diameters of 2-3 feet are common. Black Willow, as a species group, is not proving to be a successful natural regeneration story because of its shade intolerant nature and unusual site requirements.

Wood Facts

Willow glues well and readily accepts finishes. It is also resistant to splitting because of its interlocked grain. Willow is excellent for average length and width. The main uses of Willow are as moulding, paneling, furniture and furniture panels, cabinetry, boxes, and crating. The sapwood of willow is a light tan, while heartwood is pale reddish to a darker reddish brown. It is also marked by a strong and desirable figured pattern. Willow is widely accepted as a substitute for walnut.
