Forest Facts
The lower elevation sites in the Mississippi River bottomlands are where
Green Ash will more commonly be found. It is usually found as a scattered
tree among bottomland oaks, pecan, and boxelder. It can occasionally be found as a pure species in swales or flats where available seed is combined with the right environmental factors. In the Mississippi River bottomlands, the species normally reaches total heights of 60-80 feet and diameters of 2-3 feet. Green Ash is characterized by a pronounced butt swell on the heavy clay soils it most commonly inhabits.
Wood Facts
Green Ash is commonly referred to as Southern White Ash on the marketplace.
It is one of the leading commercial hardwoods in the United States.
The wood of the Southern Ash is noted for its excellent bending qualities. The hard, close-grained wood is strong, tough and elastic. In ease of working and ability to hold nails and screws, it ranks high. It can be rapidly kiln dried with excellent results. One of the main uses of Ash is in the manufacture of cabinetry. It is also used in the manufacture of sporting goods, such as baseball bats and long oars; furniture and bending parts for chairs; picture frames, flooring, and moulding.
The sapwood of ash can vary from an almost white to a blondish brown, while the heartwood is brown to grayish brown. The small wood rays are generally visible only on quartersawn surfaces. The wood has no characteristic odor or taste.
