Forest Facts
Of all species native to the southern forest, Sweetgum is found on the greatest variety of sites. The same holds true on Anderson-Tully Company lands, since the species is common to many sites in the bottomlands as well as the uplands. This is due in part to Sweetgum’s ability to restock cutover stands and old fields from seed, plus stump and root sprouts.
At its best, Sweetgum reaches 100-200 feet in height and will be 3 to 4 feet in diameter. Trees of this size and quality will usually be growing on well-drained ridges in the Mississippi River bottomlands. It is a long-lived species with older individuals reaching 200+ years of age.
Wood Facts
Lumber produced from the Sweetgum tree is strong and stiff. The hard, straight, close-grained wood has excellent turning, boring, and bending qualities. Sap Gum is excellent for average length and width.
Widely used in the manufacture of furniture, Sap Gum is also used in the production of railroad ties, crating, veneer, plywood, and pallet products, paneling, doors, moulding, dowels, stamp handles, cabinets, brush blocks,
and desks.
Color ranges from off-white colored sapwood to dark red/figured hardwood. Sap Gum is excellent when used as cherry and walnut substitutes.
