Forest Facts

Of the southern oaks, Cherrybark Oak (Quercus falcata var. pagodaefolia) is the largest in size, best quality and highest volume oak species on Anderson-Tully Company lands. It is found in the bottomlands, associated with white oak, sweetgum and hickory, as well as the uplands where it will be in the company with beech, white ash and yellow-poplar. The most impressive growth of this species can be found in the unique, loessal (wind-blown silt) bluffs that meander the length of the Mississippi River. Of equal importance with Cherrybark Oak, in terms of volume on Anderson-Tully lands, are Shumard Oak (Q. shumardii), Water Oak (Q. nigra), Willow Oak (Q. phellos) and Nuttall Oak (Q. nuttallii). These red oak species, with the exception of Shumard Oak, are more commonly found on bottomland sites along the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

Wood Facts

Red Oak is by far the most versatile and widely used of all the hardwoods. It is a heavy, extremely strong wood with above-average qualities in all machining operations. Red Oak is the most popular of all hardwood flooring and is widely used in the production of furniture, moulding and millwork, paneling, caskets, agricultural implements, and tools. Its strength and hardness have made it the most desired species for the production of railroad crossties and mine and construction timbers. The sapwood is usually white to blondish white with heartwood of distinctive reddish tint.

Approximate Annual Production: 10MM
