Forest Facts

Found throughout Anderson-Tully Company’s holdings in the Mississippi River bottomlands, Pecan is the largest species in the Hickory family. It is generally found on moist but well-drained ridges in the bottomlands as a scattered tree in company with sycamore, sweetgum, red oak, and elm. Forty percent of the nation’s Pecan grows in the rich alluvial soils of the lower Mississippi Valley.

Being a relatively shade-tolerant species, Pecan is regenerating well throughout Anderson-Tully Company bottomlands. The species is particularly important to wildlife in that its fruit carries many mast eaters through the winter months.

Wood Facts

Pecan is known and recognized for its strength and shock resistance. It is strong, tough, stiff, and is above average in all machining qualities. Pecan is excellent for average width and length.

Highly sought after as a premium furniture wood, Pecan has a grain pattern similar to walnut. Bird pecks heighten its rustic appearance and it can be used with a variety of stains. Pecan is also a very popular flooring and cabinet species. Other uses include sporting equipment, tool handles, caskets, and moulding.
